The protagonist of the late J. D. Salinger’s novel, Catcher in the Rye, Holden Caulfield’s living situation is in limbo during much of the book. He begins the novel living in a dorm at Pencey Prep school in Pennsylvania, but when he flunks out he decides to spend a week in New York City before heading back to his parents’ home in Manhattan. First, he visits a hotel, where he unsuccessfully negotiates with a hooker. He plans to stay at a former teacher’s home, but when the man fondles him in the middle of the night, Holden takes off. He sneaks in to his parents’ home to see his sister and then leaves before they come home, spending the rest of the night on the streets. At the end of the novel–and at the very beginning, from which he is retelling his story–Holden is living in California near his brother, completing his stay in a mental facility.
