The scripture based answer here would be that Judas betrays Jesus.  Judas was one of Jesus’ closest and dearest Apostles and the gospels suggest that he betrayed Jesus for some money from the Roman soldiers who wanted Jesus for sedition against Rome.  This would be one particular answer.  It can be extrapolated to implicate a larger scope, though.  On one hand, many can be seen as having betrayed Jesus.  Many stood by to watch the savior beaten and humiliated and few, if any, did anything to assist him.  Another level of betrayal could be directed at the other apostles who were unable to stop Judas from betraying the savior.  In the final analysis, many in the religion point to Judas as the direct betrayer, but do so as part of the design of Jesus and his salvation for mankind.
