Endochondral ossification is the process whereby mesenchyme produces a hyaline cartiledge precursor of the bone which is then broken down and replaced by a calcified bone matrix. This process produces bones other than cranial bones such as vertebrae, pelvic bones and limb bones. In long bones, this process occurs toward the ends of the bones at the metaphysial plates or metaphysis. The metaphysis has five histological zones: The zone of reserve cartiledge; the zone of cell proliferation; the zone of cell hypertrophy; the zone of calcification; and the zone of bone deposition.
