Both films are representative of Aronofsky’s attempt to analyze the hidden motivations and primary driving forces of characters who find their dreams deferred.  The mathematician in “Pi” is one who believes that everything can be quantified and his pursuit to create a mathematically driven world with the underlying code of reality helps to cause more trouble and deny him more happiness than originally thought.  Such a theme is explored in “Requiem for a Dream,” which is a harsher look at individuals trying to appropriate the world in accordance to their own subjectivity.  Harry, his mother, and his girlfriend as well as Tyrone are all trapped in their respective hells of consciousness, where dreams and their pursuit end up causing more pain than originally thought.  Clint Mansell’s haunting musical score of each film helps to highlight the sense of dysfunction in each film.
