The first textile mill in the U.S. was built in Rhode Island in 1790. Since the economic system of mercantilism between England and the colonies was still strictly enforced the plans for the design of the mill were smuggled out of England by Samuel Slater. In 1813 Francis Lowell opened a textile factory in Massachusetts. The Lowell factory was unique in that it employed only women and housed them in factory owned dormitories. These early New England mills produced thread and cloth were powered by the rivers and streams then later replaced by steam powered looms.
