Both Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson (two of the three Progressive Era presidents) helped to move power towards the national government.  They helped move the country away from dual federalism and more toward a “marble cake” federalism where the national government had more power.This was done largely through government involvement in economic regulation such as antitrust laws.The process of giving more power to the national government was also sped up a great deal by WWI.  The national government took many new powers for itself as it tried to make sure that the country would produce all the weapons and other war materiel needed.
