Pete Bancini is labeled a “Chronic” in the ward. He has been brain damaged since birth, and holds a series of low-level, menial jobs. At the first group meeting in which McMurphy participates, Pete complains of being tired. This is normal for him. However, when Nurse Ratched dismisses/ignores him, he attacks and orderly and declares he’s been dead on his feet his entire life. He also declares he’s tired of sitting and talking. Nurse Ratched resorts to tranquilizers to subdue him, rather violently. Thus, Bancini is an example of the tensions at work under the surface in the ward. His outburst foreshadows the battle of wits which will play out in the novel.
