What is troubling Huck’s conscience is what troubles him a lot during this novel.  Huck is feeling bad about what he is doing with regard to Jim.  He realizes that it is (in most people’s opinions) wrong for him to help Jim run away.  But he doesn’t want Jim to go back to slavery.This problem is the most obvious example of the way that Huck experiences a struggle between his conscience and what society says he is supposed to be — between his personal values and the values of society.
