In optics, Fresnel’s bright spot is a bright point of light which appears at the center of the shadow of a circular obstacle to light from a point source. It is of historical interest due to the role it played in the development of the wave theory of light.  Since the bright spot occurs within the geometrical shadow (that is, the light doesn’t pass straight through the opaque sphere), the particle theory of light was shown to be incomplete.The only way to account for the bright spot is to consider how a wave would interact with the sphere. When light shines on a circular obstacle, Huygens’ principle says that every point along the circumference acts as a new point source of light. The light coming from each of these points on the circumference of the obstacle to the center of the shadow travels exactly the same distance, and so all the light arrives in phase and constructively interferes. At all other points, destructive interference occurs, attenuating light reflection from these points.
