The major difference between the ancient civilization of Chaco Canyon and other Mesoamerican civilizations was in they way they built their living spaces. Later called the Anasazi (cliff dwellers) the people from Chaco Canyon built three story dwellings in the high cave like outcroppings called mesas. They utilized building materials such as wood pilings to secure the houses high up in the cliffs. The Anasazi used ladders to enter their houses through the roofs. These unique houses were built deep inside the canyons, providing the people relief from the hot summer sun as well as keeping them warm in the winter.
