I’d have a hard time labeling Chris McCandless as mentally ill, at least based on the slim psychological evidence we have in the book itself.  I think the term is tossed around too easily, and in the earlier parts of our history, we were quick to label those who thought and acted differently as “crazy”.  I think the question of McCandless’ mental health is more complicated than that.He does seem to exhibit some symptoms of manic depression, although he seems manic more often than depressed.  The severe act of cutting himself off from society, burning his identity and donating all of his cash seem to be manic acts, but I don’t think we could say that with any degree of certainty.  He’s different, to be sure, and at points he seems a little divorced from the reality he faces, certainly from that of how tough an Alaskan winter would be, but I don’t think I can call him mentally ill.
