Old friends of the Finch family, the widowed Miss Maudie Atkinson obviously has strong feelings for Atticus. She is one of the few people to whom the usually serious Atticus exhibits his humorous side, and Maudie jokingly calls him a “devil from hell.” She considers Jem and Scout as equals and friends, partly out of respect for the way Atticus has brought them up.
