What causes wind?

The immediate cause of wind is air pressure and, more specifically, differences in air pressure from one place to another.Wind occurs when one part of the atmosphere has a lower air pressure than another.  When this happens, the air in the lower pressure area rises and air from the higher pressure area rushes in to fill the space created.  This is why storms are preceded by dropping air pressure readings. The ultimate cause of wind is the sun’s heat.  The heat from the sun is largely responsible for raising air pressure in some places and lowering it in others.
