Sweden has a long and illustrious history of Olympic wins in cross-country skiing for a total of 56 metals. Per Erik Hedlund  took the Gold in 1928 with a record that has still not been surpassed. Hedlund began a tradition when he insisted on wearing red and white to celebrate his great victory instead of the Swedish uniform of blue. For the next 48 years (until 1976), Swedish cross-country skiers always wore red and white at Olympic competitions.Between 1956 and 1964 Sixten Jernberg won four Golds and five other medals in cross-country skiing. Gunde Svan won two Golds at Sarajevo in 1984 and two more Golds at Calgary in 1988. Svan was the youngest man to ever win a cross-country Olympic title, and the honor was bestowed on him in Sarajevo. Female cross-country skier Toini Gustafsson won three medals at Grenoble, though no Golds, in 1968. Sweden has never hosted the Winter Olympics.
