What are the choices that she is faced with within The House on Mango Street?

In the first story of The House on Mango Street, titled same as the book, we have the family moving into a new place, this house.  The choices “she” makes, depending on who you mean by “she”, include having to choose to move the family into a bad neighborhood in a house that’s too small and decaying.  While they had always talked of moving into a house that is their own, that they could be proud of and no one could kick them out of, they have to choose this one instead.  They have to settle. The girl, telling the story from the point of view of the narrator, is faced with the choice of telling the nun passing by where they lived.  She is ashamed of where they lived (the place before the house on Mango) and chooses to tell her, though it’s clearly embarrassing.  We get the impression she wouldn’t tell anyone in the future and that this shame of being in poverty weighs heavily on her.
