One classroom activity that I have used successfully for vocabulary is to get the children in a group with a big board and marker, and get the children to suggest alternative words for some of the nouns and adjectives. For example, all the words they can think of to describe ‘sand.’ I even join in by having a little poem or rhyme ready, so I can contribute at the end! i make sure to write them all up in a flow diagram and repeat each one often and as it is said for the slower readers. Then, we go over them all – and many times they will use these ‘new’ words in their conversational and writing activity. Repeat each contribution out aloud as the child says – for the other children to hear clearly.
