This happens in the part of the book where Guy and Millie are reading books.  They hear a scratching at the door but the door doesn’t announce anyone. My assumption is that the voice chime only works on human beings and it was not a human being who was at the door.  Instead, it was the Mechanical Hound that had come to the Montags’ home.   We find this out for sure when Captain Beatty tells Guy Montag that he had sent the hound around to Guy’s house to try to scare Guy into returning to “good” behavior.
