Kurtz is brave because he despises the manner in which the tyrannical British unjustly uses capitalism to exploit the African natives and destroy their continent. He wants justice to prevail.  He remains in the heart of Africa to help the Africans.  Kurtz knows that the natives accept him, but he is well aware that danger persists for them, if others less humane should brave the river.Marlow hears stories about Kurtz on the trip down the river.  The stories reveal that they have similar characteristics. Curiosity was one of them.  He becomes fascinated with Kurtz, and his curiosity of Kurtz drives him to plunge into the darkness to finally meet him.
