The author, Tom Godwin, uses the word “jettison” in regards to stowaways on the space ships.  This means that Barton (the pilot) must “throw the stowaway overboard.” For this sci-fi story, Barton is required to make Madeline, the stowaway, enter a secured area and then he will remotely open a hatch through which she will be sucked into space and presumably die.The reason for the rule about stowaways is that Barton can carry only enough fuel to get his ship with its medicine to the remote planet where ill humans desperately await his arrival.  If he has any extra weight at all–such as another person–he will run out of fuel which will kill him, Madeline, and most likely the people waiting for the life-saving medicine.
