One of the things that stands out to me is the idea of making the best of what you have.  Ruth made an incredible effort constantly to make sure that she stretched all the resources she could to get her kids into the best schools, to try and make sure they were all fed, to do everything she could for them despite the barriers that they often faced because of religion or race or anything else.  She did this despite numerous very difficult circumstances in her own personal life, and I think her children also demonstrated this time and time again.  It wasn’t always right there in front of them, James for example had to see a few things in his trip down south that helped him decide to take advantage of the opportunities he had, but in the end it is apparent that her children learned this lesson well from Ruth.
