There is really only one main point of view in the short story ‘The Tell-Tale Heart’ by Edgar Allen Poe, and that is the angle of the narrator/speaker who is the murderer. He tells the story from his own point of view – first person – and embellishes it with his crazed reasoning and paranoid suspicions which means that we,as readers, get to hear his thoughts. This does not always happen in prose – sometimes a story is told very baldly as a series of chronological facts with no insights into the author’s/speaker’s mind. In our case however, we need to know what is in the murderer’s mind to make any sense of why a man who was congratulating himself on the ‘perfect murder’ would want to dig up floorboards again in full view of the authorities!
