In Joyce’s “Eveline,” Eveline, the daughter of an abusive father and brother to the son that is the recipient of most of the abuse, plays the role of mother to both father and brother.  Her life is shown to be, figuratively speaking, a form of paralysis. As a female, she would have few opportunities to better her position in society or her life in general.In the story, she does receive one opportunity to better her situation, however:  probably the only kind of opportunity she could ever hope for.  That opportunity is in the form of a man who wants to take her away and give her a new life in Argentina. Ironically, though stuck in the gender role of mother, and faced with limited opportunities as a woman, she freezes, so to speak, does not board the ship that could take her away, and stays in Dublin.
