The irony in this story is that people who seem so completely nice and normal could do such a horrible thing. The theme of the story is that horrible things can happen anywhere.  I believe that this was written as a reaction in part to the Holocaust where perfectly normal Germans turned on people who had been their neighbors. The irony helps make this point more clearly.  These people are not some kind of canniblals or savages.  They are normal people in a lovely setting and yet they do this horrible thing just because it is traditional and expected.
