It is important that the whole story is told in third-person narration and that everything that is seen or known is accomplished from the confines of the Whites’ little, out-of-the-way home. That way, the the description of the paw and its supposed powers and the wishes made while holding it are merely described and not interpreted. Likewise, all the things that happen after the wishes are made are merely described, and, while the subsequent events are certainly coincidental, no absolute conclusions can be draw as to cause and effect. The house, in a way, then, is like the minds of Mr. and Mrs. White: able to see out windows but not through doors… capable of knowing what is but incapable of seeing what is not… and as lost as the rest of us on the subjects of chance and fate.
