Just like the title, the novel Hard Times is a foreshadowing of what you are about to read, and of the style Charles Dickens chose to write it.In the novel, you do not get eloquent vocabulary, but rough and tough verbal analysis with lots of melodrama and angst. You get hard descriptions of the bleak circumstances in which “the hands” at the workhouses lived. It is a story where details are not hidden or given to the imagination, and it is, as the title implies, play tough, hard and direct. This contrasts with the other novels by Dickens, maybe with one exception with Bleak House, in which Dickens is not the colorful storyteller, but the tough reporter whose purpose is to expose the banalities of the middle and upper classes, versus the horrible life styles of the poor in England, particularly in the slum districts of the East of London.
