Basically, what this poem is talking about is the sadness of death.  Specifically, it is talking about how sad it is when a loved one dies and is separated from you forever. The speaker says that his love’s spirit did always move upward because it was such a good spirit. But now he is unable to participate in that spirit’s rise.It is foolish to think that he could use his own will to go where she is.He doesn’t usually fear death. But sometimes when he’s out at dusk, he gets the horrible feeling that, after death, he and his love will not be together.
