Have you thought about literature circles? That provides students with some choice as to which book they select, and it also increases the engagement level of the class. When I taught middle school English, one semester I did literature circles where students had a choice of Anne Frank’s diary, Zlata’s Diary, The Lottery Rose, and Johnny Tremain. The theme that tied all the novels together was man’s inhumanity to man and how adult individual cruelty and warfare impacts children. We had some great whole-class discussions on the theme, with students providing supporting information from their novels.
