On an immediate level, All My Sons is about family.  Joe claims that he maintained the business at all costs so that he could support his family and leave a successful legacy to his sons.  Joe sees his role as a father as one of support, and he places the care of his family as a priority in his life. On another level, the play is about American society and the role that citizens play in upholding the ideals of the nation.  Joe does not realize that he is responsible not only for his own family, but for the families of others in the nation whom he severely affected by playing a direct role in the death of their sons. Finally, the play remains universal because it tackles thematic issues that span across time, culture, and setting:  the conflicting relationship between fathers and sons and the tension between business ethics and morality.
